Learnerships
A learnership stands as a specialized educational initiative, predominantly centred around workplace-based learning, culminating in the acquisition of an NQF-registered qualification. These learnerships are closely tailored to specific vocations or industries, such as Technical Support, Software Development, or Project Management.
The administration of learnerships falls under the purview of Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). These programs, mandated by the government, have been designed to equip learners with the skills necessary for successful integration into the workforce. Learnership initiatives serve as a conduit for participants to cultivate vital competencies and gain valuable hands-on experience, thus expanding their prospects for gainful employment or entrepreneurial endeavours.
The foundation of learnerships is laid upon legally binding agreements, involving the employer, the learner, and a Training Provider. This agreement serves to delineate the responsibilities and obligations of each party, thereby ensuring the quality of training and safeguarding the interests of
all stakeholders.
Learnerships fundamentally enhance access to education and training, enabling learners to engage in both work and educational pursuits concurrently, effectively kick-starting their careers while pursuing academic qualifications. SETAs oversee the meticulous management of learnerships, aligning them with the needs of specific industries or occupational sectors within the economy. Additionally, SETAs are entrusted with overseeing the registration of learnerships, ensuring alignment with the ever-evolving skills development landscape
For the learner, learnerships confer several benefits:
- Preservation of income, as opposed to the income loss often associated with full-time formal
education. - Improved career prospects, given the close correlation between learnerships and actual job
roles and occupations. - Provision of a springboard for future educational opportunities.
- Simultaneous acquisition of a formal qualification and relevant workplace experience.
